🌿 Clean Swaps
Real food ingredients that naturally replace dairy without chemicals or additives.
Cashews
The ultimate clean base for creams and cheeses. When soaked and blended, they mimic the fat content of heavy cream perfectly.
Nutritional Yeast
A deactivated yeast (not for bread) that provides a savory, nutty, cheesy flavor. Rich in B-vitamins. Just one ingredient.
Arrowroot / Tapioca
A natural root starch used to thicken sauces. A "cleaner" alternative to cornstarch or chemical stabilizers.
Oats
Naturally creamy when blended. Perfect for homemade milks and sauces. Look for certified gluten-free if needed.
Potatoes
When blended, create a creamy base for sauces and soups. Natural starch thickens without additives.
Carrots
Add natural sweetness and color to cheese sauces. Blend with cashews for orange "cheese" color.
Coconut Milk
Full-fat canned version provides creaminess for sauces and desserts. Just coconut and water.
Avocado
Natural healthy fats create creamy textures in smoothies and desserts. No additives needed.
⚠️ Hidden Dairy
Ingredients derived from milk that can hide in "dairy-free" products. Always avoid these.
Whey
A milk protein. Often found in crackers, bread, and "natural" flavorings. Avoid this for lactose-intolerant kids.
Casein / Caseinate
The main protein in milk. Often used in "non-dairy" creamers or soy cheeses. It is a dairy derivative—skip it.
Milk Solids / Dry Milk
Dehydrated milk powder. Found in chocolate, baked goods, and processed foods. Contains lactose.
Lactose
The actual milk sugar. Used as filler in medications, spices, and processed foods.
Curds
Milk proteins that have thickened. Found in some butter substitutes and processed cheeses.
Ghee
Clarified butter. While proteins are removed, high-anxiety for beginners. Best to avoid initially.
Recaldent (CPP-ACP)
Dental protective agent from milk protein. Found in sugar-free gum and dental products.
🤔 Weird Stuff
Not dairy, but highly processed additives that can cause digestive issues. We prefer natural alternatives.
Carrageenan
An additive from seaweed used to thicken store-bought milks. While dairy-free, it can cause tummy upset in kids. We avoid it.
Xanthan Gum
A lab-created thickener. Not dairy, but can be hard on little digestive systems. We swap this for natural starches.
Guar Gum
Another lab thickener. Can cause gas and bloating in sensitive children. Natural starches work better.
Titanium Dioxide
Used for whitening in processed foods. Not dairy but unnecessary additive. We prefer natural colors.
Natural Flavors
Can contain dairy derivatives. Companies don't have to disclose sources. When in doubt, skip it.
Maltodextrin
Highly processed starch filler. Can spike blood sugar and provides no nutritional value.
Modified Food Starch
Chemically altered starch. Processing methods vary and may involve dairy. We prefer whole food starches.
